Southbank at a Glance

OVERVIEW

Residing along the shimmering Yarra River and within walking distance to Melbourne’s CBD, Southbank is truly the crown of the city. This professional neighbourhood is a hub of culture, tourism, and entertainment making it a popular place for city workers and visitors. Whether you’re grabbing coffee before work, riding your bike along the Promenade, or watching the rowers race across the Yarra, this sophisticated neighbourhood has everything the professional city slicker needs.

Southbank Promenade offers a range of boutique and designer shopping, 5-star dining, and lively entertainment: from street performers and buskers to Crown casino and its myriad of slot machines and secluded nightclubs.

Home to Melbourne’s Arts Precinct, the area has one of the highest concentrations of arts and cultural organisations in the world, such as the National Gallery of Victoria, Malthouse Theatre, Hamer Hall, and Melbourne Recital Centre, to name a few. There is entertainment for everyone in Southbank.

Formerly an industrial area, Southbank has seen significant and rapid residential development. High rises line most of the suburb. Astounding city views can range from penthouse living to – if you are lucky – more affordable two-bedroom apartments.

SUBURB PROFILE

Currently, the population in Southbank is 18,706. According to Domain, Southbank is primarily home to younger, single professionals ranging from 20 to 39 year olds. 65% of these young professionals are renting compared to 35% who own properties within the area.

67% are full time workers. The top industries of employment within Southbank are cafés and restaurants, computer system design and related services, and banking.

Southbank is a culturally diverse suburb with the majority of residents either born in Australia or China, creating a neighbourhood that combines local and overseas entertainment and cuisine.

LIFESTYLE + LOCATION

On the cusp of Melbourne’s CBD, Southbank is perfect for inner-city workers. The most common form of transport to work is walking followed by driving and taking the tram. Access to public transport is excellent with Flinders Street Station a 11-minute walk from the suburb’s centre.

Eager to try a variety delicacies at the South Melbourne market? You’re in luck with South Melbourne only a 5-minute drive. For closer options, catch a Lime bike down to the Promenade to experience quick and easy bites or a sophisticated dine-in meal.

The addition of South Wharf to the Southbank locale has also added more apartments, a Direct Factory Outlet shopping centre, and a 5-star luxury hotel. South Wharf is only a 15-minute stroll along the promenade and features some of Melbourne’s famous landmarks, including the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Melbourne Maritime Museum.

The University of Melbourne’s Victorian College of Arts is located on St Kilda Rd and contributes to Southbank’s hub for knowledge and the arts. Home to 1300 students and offering courses in dance, film and television, drama, theatre performance, and writing, the area is the quintessential hotspot for niche theatre productions and year-round music performances.

You certainly won’t miss your hit of activity in and around Southbank either. If you are looking for the perfect running spot, The Tan is right around the corner. And if you are sick of cycling the same route to work, Port Melbourne is a great weekend choice, with an easy bike route travelling along Normanby Rd and Walter Reserve until eventually hitting the beach.
